About the Exhibition

The Hong Kong-based photography bookstore and gallery, "Devedo," is proud to present Jason Lau's solo exhibition, "Platinotype Shadows of Ngau Chi Wan." This exhibition is a profound visual dialogue on time and collective memory. It focuses on the historic Ngau Chi Wan village, one of the few remaining traditional villages in the Kowloon urban area, which is currently facing the pressures of urban development and potential disappearance.

The Artistic Process: Platinotype

Photographer Jason Lau has specifically chosen the 19th-century "platinotype" (platinum-palladium) printing process to interpret these scenes. This complex, rare technique involves depositing precious metal particles deep into the fibers of handmade paper. It not only achieves a remarkably natural and detailed grayscale transition from deep shadows to bright highlights but also grants the photographs exceptional archival longevity, capable of lasting for centuries without fading. These steady, weight-laden black-and-white images serve as an elegiac tribute to the village, freezing the fading corners of Ngau Chi Wan in time.
