Program
Ora-Ora gallery is proud to present 'Phantom Reality,' the inaugural solo exhibition of Chinese contemporary artist Jiang Heng at the gallery. Based in Guangzhou, Jiang's work is profoundly influenced by industrial growth and consumerist culture. Through this exhibition, he invites viewers to reflect on how individuals and society navigate the shifting landscape of cultural norms and how, in the pursuit of material and fleeting pleasure, some of our most cherished values may be fading away.
Highlights
The exhibition focuses on two major series by the artist:
- 'Wig' Series: Vibrant and smooth-painted canvases depicting wigs, evoking a subtle sense of anxiety and the absence of life.
- 'I Divide My Body into Pixels and Give Them to You' Series: A sculptural series using painted wood that blurs the boundaries of time and space. These works, presented in a pixelated form, capture a state between decomposition and evolution.
Jiang Heng contrasts the traditional Chinese reverence for hair—as per the 'Classic of Filial Piety'—with the modern, fickle nature of synthetic wigs, prompting viewers to consider their own moral compass and values. As Dr. Henrietta Tsui-Leung, co-founder of Ora-Ora, notes, Jiang captures the intense tension between fast-paced consumer culture and deep-seated values with remarkable insight.
